What is a “Regular Decision” in a graduate school application?

chibi asked:

Looking for my graduate school application deadlines, I read “December 15th for Early Decision and April 1st for Regular Decision”. What does it mean? I’m sorry but I’m not from USA and it’s not easy to understand all the rules!

Early decision means that you will know earlier if you are accepted or not, it also means that you are indicating that you will definitely go to that school if you are accepted.
Regular means you will not know if you are accepted or not for a few more months than if you had applied early decision. Also, if you do regular decision, you are not as “bound” to that school.

It means that you’ll be notified along with everyone else of your admissal. If you have early action, you could find out sooner.
