Eddie asked:

I’m applying for graduate school and the admissions counselor asked if I applied to other schools. I’m not really doing that right now, but should I say yes? That is, does it make a difference in a positive or negative way if I am applying to other schools?

You do not need to tell them unless they request the information.

Well it would be pretty foolhardy to just apply to one school! They know that you will be applying to at least one backup school. They just like to gather information about which schools their applicants have applied to so that they can determine who their competition is. So if you and a few other students said that you’ve applied to school X they will look at that school to maybe see what school X offers that they don’t. It would not have any negative effect on your application.
