If you want to work with cancer you should apply to be a radiation oncologist and do research. If you wanna go into microbiology then you can always do research as a pathologist. You can also do a MD/PhD! Best of both worlds. MD/PhD is anywhere from 5-7 years and if you do that medical school is free. I say you go to medical school. If you are interested in performing clinical trials (testing medications on people) or testing therapies on people then getting a dual PhD, MD is probably the right path.
