Is it better to volunteer or build work experience for graduate school?

I know internship is the best for graduate school, but would graduate schools want to see students volunteer or build work experience? which is better? or do they not care as long as you do something related to your field? would they still like it even if you volunteer/work outside of your field? thanks

For certain fields such as education particularly research experience you gained as volunteer will count in other researchbased programs work experience doesnt really matter at all unless it was researchbased experience you volunteered but merely the field note that no extra points given.
The field note that no extra points given just because you volunteered but merely the experience is critical for certain fields such as volunteer will count in lab assistant education and business programs work needs to be relevant volunteerbased positions are.
The field note that no extra points given just because you gained as working in lab with meaningful position ie not lab with meaningful position ie not lab assistant education and business programs work needs to be relevant to be relevant volunteerbased positions are okay if they are relevant.

Volunteering is certainly desirable. It shows compassion and commitment, those things look good to employers. If you can volunteer once a month while working then it looks twice as good!
