Begin Investing Now: Write an Outstanding Graduate Admission Essay
Filed Under grad school | Comments Off
Nancy Haverford asked:
Admission to graduate school is not easy. In fact, it is highly competitive, especially if you want to get into a prestigious university and graduate program. Ivy League universities often have very selective admissions criteria in which only a small percentage of hopeful candidates get a thumbs-up.
The graduate admission essay and other admission requirements
Obviously, you cannot get into a graduate program without a bachelor’s degree. Admission requirements vary from one university or program to another, but generally, you need to have an impressive GPA, pass a battery of tests and interviews, great recommendations from your college professors and other mentors, and an excellent graduate admission
essay.
How to write an impressive graduate admission essay
Your essay is your statement of purpose, and it can make or break your application. A good essay should be able to present your suitability for the graduate degree that you wish to pursue. Although the question, “Why do you want to pursue graduate studies from this university?” seems very basic, it is not easy to answer. After all, you need to keep in mind that the answer should present you at your best, particularly focusing on your values, interests, and accomplishments.
The admissions board’s purpose for requiring you to write your essay is to determine why you are worthy of being accepted into graduate school. To meet their expectations, you need to go through four fundamental stages: pre-writing, drafting, editing, and proofreading. As with any type of writing, a good admissions essay requires organization of ideas, so you need to brainstorm, narrow down your ideas, and come up with a comprehensive outline in the pre-writing stage. Brainstorming simply means that you draw ideas from your unconscious mind and bring them to the surface. Think about your personal experiences; answer questions, like “What do you consider as major accomplishments?” and “Why do you think of them as such?” Don’t attempt to write off ideas at this stage. Just let the ideas flow, and record them as they come through listing or “free writing.”
Once you feel satisfied with your list, narrow your list down by matching the items to the specifications of the program that you want. For instance, if you are applying for a program in political science, your winning a trophy at a singing competition would have far less value than being a member of your college’s debate society. Afterwards, organize your outline. Do you want to present a chronological review of your accomplishments or would you rather present ideas grouped according to your interests, philosophies, and influences? During the drafting or writing stage, make sure that you highlight your best qualities. If you are resilient and determined, for instance, write about an experience at work or in college wherein you pulled through a major disappointment. Don’t make up stories, though. When you write, think about how your degree would help you give back to the community and not just how it can help you fulfill your dreams.
Edit your work for grammatical slips, and tweak it around so the content creates a stronger impact. You want the board to see you as a well-versed, logical individual and not as a scatterbrain. Proofread for any typographical errors and misplaced punctuation. Get someone whose opinion you respect to read your essay. Your essay should make you feel proud of yourself before you send it in.

Research Interests - Key to Graduate School Admissions
Filed Under grad school | Comments Off
Sheridan Salter asked:
Psychology is an incredibly diverse field of study. It is extremely versatile with lots of potential for cross-collaboration among a number of fields. As an undergraduate, you’ve likely been exposed to a wide range of topics through your classes. Which ones did you find most interesting? Was it the class lecture on autism? How children acquire language? Or the fact that women suffer from depression more than men - and identifying the reasons why?
Articulating clearly defined research interests will be paramount to gaining entry to graduate school in psychology, especially research-based programs. In my opinion, the most important quality you will need is passion for the subject matter at hand. What do I mean by passion? What topics do you frequently engage in discussion? What particular topics catch your eye as you browse news or magazines? What topics can you (almost) literally discuss all day long and never get tired of discussing the ins and outs of?
There are a number of ways that you can identify your research interests. The first one I mentioned is through material you’ve been exposed to in class. The second is just good ol’ life experience. I had always been interested in the media, but it was an internship experience that piqued my interest even more. At the time, I was working as the “behavior specialist” with teenagers at an alternative school. One of the interesting observations I made was how much influence music artists hold over their beliefs. The students would spend all day talking about them and quoting lyrics from songs (which I guess isn’t all that surprising knowing how fanatic teenagers are about their favorite music artists!).
I started to wonder about how song lyrics and music video images influenced their views of what it means to be a man or woman. I skimmed through studies in scholarly journals and realized how much we still don’t know about the real-life impact of media images. What worked in my favor was that there was a serious lack of information about how media images and consumption affects youth (and I was just the person to solve this problem, I said in my personal statement!).
Follow a similar process and you may have just uncovered a research interest for yourself!

Miami Schools Teach Entrepreneurship

Stacy Andell asked:
National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Funds Programs in Miami Schools
This summer, 126 students from Miami Schools entered a six-week training session and contest to learn about entrepreneurship. Funded and run by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, the six week summer session will teach the students how to create a business plan, how to secure start up funds and then how to pitch the idea to real business people. The twelve best plans will compete in the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Macy’s 2006 Business Plan Competition. Only one winner will represent Florida in New York in October with a chance to win $10,000.
The Miami Schools system has some of the highest dropout rates in the state of Florida. One of the principal reasons for this may be that students a bored and do not see how their school work relates to the real world. The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship contest shows how owning a business relates to math and reading skills. This gives a meaning and a relevance to education. A study by the Harvard Graduate School of Education found that students exposed to entrepreneurship classes are more interested in education, are more likely to go to college and more likely to engage in independent reading than their peers.
New National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Programs in the Miami Schools
The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship will, over the next two years, establish programs in 20 Miami Schools resulting in the program being accessible by nearly 3,400 middle and high school students. Some schools will offer more than just the summer contest but integrated into the curriculum. A Miami business lawyer and one of the judges who helped pick the finalists, stressed issues pertaining to the insurance and salary of the employees. This is the same issues that he would address with actual entrepreneurs. Several of the students from Miami Schools in the program have attempted to actually start a company. One student in the contest, Steve Rodriguez, has created X-Paks, a company that sells drawstring backpacks that can be produced in the shape and color the client wants. The sixteen year old is an aspiring engineer that wants to go on to MIT. He hopes that word of mouth marketing will lead his company to success. His partner is his mother who does the sewing and shares in half the profits.
Another student in the competition, Elise Lorenzo, has created a plan for a company call Envision Art. This high school sophomore’s company plan, based around creating an online art gallery, won points with the judges for her creative use of an S Corporation structure, which will allow her to reflect company profits on her personal tax returns.
National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship
National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship was founded in 1987. National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship was started by a businessman and former teacher, Steve Mariotti. National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Miami Schools program aims to prevent dropout and improve academic performance among students who were at risk of failing or quitting school. Mr. Mariotti used his knowledge of business to help him to connect to his low-income students by giving them the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, their innate “street smarts” can easily develop into “academic smarts” and “business smarts.” Through entrepreneurship, youth discover that what they are learning in the classroom is relevant to the real world.

Student Loan Advice - Help Fund Graduate School
Filed Under grad school | Comments Off
RJ Licata asked:
If paying for your undergraduate education wasn’t hard enough, finding ways to cover your graduate school expenses can be impossible. Often working while attending graduate school, most students would do just about anything to keep from having to take out more student loans.
Unfortunately, there are only so many things you can do, short of robbing a bank (not recommended), to come up with the cash to pay for school outright, so students have no choice but to take out graduate school loans.
The good news is there are loans specifically for graduate students that try to make the entire process as easy on the student as possible.
The Graduate PLUS Loan
The federal government has a loan specifically for graduate students called the Graduate PLUS Loan. It has a low, fixed interest rate, meaning it will stay the same until the loan is completely paid off. This is good because it prevents surprise due bills if the interest rate were to suddenly jump. Fixed rates will save you money and make it easy to budget your finances.
One of the nice things about the Graduate PLUS loan is the ability to defer payments until you are finished with school. This way you’re able to focus on your classes and worry about paying your loan back after you’ve graduated and are hopefully working a high paying job.
You won’t need a cosigner to help you get the loan, either, which makes things easier. All lenders require is a brief credit check to make sure you haven’t recently defaulted on any other loan payments. Once you clear that red tape you will be able to request a loan up to the total amount of tuition, room and board, minus any other financial aid you’ll be receiving.
It’s common to be in a situation where paying for school is difficult, but thanks to the Graduate PLUS Loan, many students are able to avoid taking out pricey private student loans that usually have much higher interest rates and are less flexible in their repayment structure.
There are many federal school loans available to help you pay for graduate school and more student loan advice can be found at the School Loan Consolidation Guide.

Things to Consider When Using Sample Graduate School Essays as References

Nancy Haverford asked:
Obtaining a graduate degree is never easy, and the challenges begin during the application stage. If you are aiming for admission into the most reputable academic institutions, you should expect that the degree of difficulty in fulfilling the admission requirements would be greater. Competition is tougher, and the Admission Board is more selective. On the average, those who get accepted into graduate programs range from 9% to 50% of the total number of applicants. At this frustrating rate, the best thing you can do is to turn in a graduate school essay that stands out from the rest. How? Here are a few of the reasons why your admission essay can spell the difference between acceptance and rejection, and how you can make these work in your favor:
Why you need to put in a lot of effort in your graduate school essay
It would be safe to assume that those who want to attend graduate school are ambitious and determined to succeed. Therefore, it is expected of them to have outstanding GPAs and to receive the highest recommendations from former professors and mentors. What the Admission Board could not assess through the stellar grades and good words are the applicant’s personal vision and commitment to finish the program and do something noteworthy out of it. The board would want you to tell them how much pressure you can take and what you intend to do with your degree once you have earned it. The admission essay is also referred to as “personal statement,” as it sums up your personality, motivations, and goals.
How you can write a graduate school essay that stands out
Do your homework. Before brainstorming for the key elements that you want to include in your essay, read up on the background of the university and program of your choice. Take note of remarkable people who have studied at the same university or completed the same program. This should give you an idea of the things that the university or program considers important or takes pride in. Later, when you come up with a list of items to discuss in your essay, keep in mind that your essay should be able to show the Admission Board that you and your goals are a good match to the ideals of the university.
Browse through relevant sample graduate school essays of successful applicants to the best programs and universities. Study them, and you will see that they have some things in common, such as clarity of goals, consistency of purpose, and personal experiences which influenced the applicants to want to do something good for society. For instance, if you are applying for a community development program, include relevant extra-curricular activities, such as volunteering, organizing student activities, or being a professor’s research assistant in handling focus group discussions. However, avoid padding your essay with activities and achievements you did not really participate in or have. The Admission Board will be able to detect discrepancies when you get called in for the interview, and one lie will cause them to wonder if there are other things in your essay that you have lied about.
Writing an effective graduate school essay is not just a matter of composition and style, although these things also help. The bottom line is that your essay should present you as a suitable candidate for the degree. Do not copy the sample essays that you would find, no matter how good they are. Exercise good judgment in deciding how personal you would want your essay to be. The key to an outstanding essay is the extent to which it explains your principles and motivations in wanting to specialize in a particular field.

I know that this question is quite broad in regards to what I am asking. I will be heading to graduate school in the fall for a program in Higher Education Administration and I am very much looking forward to it. I would just like to know from those who attended on-campus what type of experience you had. What type of graduate program did you enter in to ? How long did it take you to complete? Was it easier or harder than you expected? Did you have a lot of classroom discussions? Did you have decent experiences working with other classmates? Were your professors engaging and helpful in regards to the class?
